Slate Article - Rethinking the School Desk

The English assignment due this week is to discuss an article, of my choosing, from www.slate.com.  I selected the piece entitled, "Rethinking the School Desk", because it brought a lot of good ideas to the surface.  For instance, if our children had better furniture in the class room, their attention would be more focused on the lesson itself then on the readjusting aspect.  I mean think about....how many times do you adjust your position while sitting?

Because of my work schedule, I have to take evening classes (which last three hours).  So I can definitely relate to the uncomfortable seating arrangements.  The hard wooden chairs that are supplied really put tremendous pressure on my butt and back.  I have to change my posture every time I turn around.  It's very distressing because it looks like I have ants in my pants from moving around so much.  I thought about bringing one of those oval-shaped hernia pillows to sit on, but I'm afraid of what my classmates might think.

In either case, LSU-S should consider investing in new furniture the next time their budget allows them.  If they do, they might have more students enroll then going else where for education.  Just a thought.

Diagnosis: Scoliosis

According to Wikipedia, "Scoliosis is a medical condition in which a person's spine is curved from side to side."  In other words, the spine of an individual with scoliosis may have a "S" or a "C" shape than a straight line.   If not taken care of early, it can lead to diminishing lung capacity or other hazardous conditions.

Why bring this subject up?  Because I was diagnosed with it during my 8th grade year.  I was thirteen when I was fitted into my back brace and didn't get out of it until May of my junior year of high school.  I had to wear it for 23 hours a day; leaving one hour for bathing.  Needless to say I was not able to participate in any of my school's extracurricular activities.  So, I became an outcast.

In any event, it still gives me nightmares just thinking about those days.  Now I'm 39 and, to a certain extent, am thankful for wearing that brace.  On the other hand, I'm appalled because I still am limited to what I can do.  Is old age setting in?

A Night Out

Last night I went out to the Sand Bar to watch my boyfriend shoot pool.  In between his shots, I would observe the people around me and I noticed something intriguing.  All the guys in the bar were dressed casually--blue jeans and t-shirts.  The women, on the other hand, were wearing low cut blouses, tight jeans or skirts, and high heal shoes.

Now I know why the waitresses dress the way they do....that's how they make more tips.  But why do women dress more sophisticated then men?  Are they that hard up on getting noticed?  Why are men not that worried?  This is really mind boggling because when I was growing up, both men and women would dress to impress.  Has fad changed that much in twenty years?

What Shall I Wear Today?

Being a single mom, I am always pressed for time.  So instead of taking a shower in the morning and then figure out what to wear, I bathe in the evening and pick out my clothes for the next day.  But every time I stand in front of my closet to choose, I have a pondering look on my face.  I have a nice variety of clothes to choose from, but can't make up my mind.  How can I have so many clothes yet wear the same ones over and over again?  Is this normal?  Why don’t I wear some of the clothes that are hidden away in my closet?  Are they out of style or have they gotten to small for me?  Whatever the answer is, I’ll always be bum-fuzzled.
